Review of Bazooka Wowbagger - Savior of Paperface by XkyRauh
Overall Rating: 8
Woah--this came out of nowhere, and was a pleasant surprise. A full mod of Commander Keen: Marooned on Mars done up as a promotional event for a band. Impressive. Someone obviously has a lot of enthusiasm!
The graphics are really what makes this mod stand out in most peoples' minds--they're colorful, well animated, crisp, and slick; the main character is cute, and the redesigned enemies all contribute to the mod's purpose--to convey what the band is all about.
Sadly, level design is really what weakens this mod in some places. Certain levels, while vivid and awe-inspiring in some places, look almost forgotten about in others. One particular level sticks out in my mind, containing a handful of points and a single enemy, followed by a very long, monotonous vertical climb through a block maze without any reward other than a ship part. Ho-hum.
The map screen, while very sharp and detailed looking, was actually quite confusing for me to navigate. Often an area that looks quite passable is a dead-end, and there is a lot of wasted space.
All in all, this mod stands out as an impressive demonstration for the possibilities of the Keen:Vorticons engine. It achieves a level of atmosphere that makes most other mods look simply juvenille.
