Review of Commander Keen: Episode Y - Extra Dark by XkyRauh
Overall Rating: 6.75
Here's an interesting idea: Take a Keen mod, which is in itself an elaboration upon ideas presented in the original piece of software, and mod that--creating, if you will, a mod of a mod. That's what Episode Y: Extra Dark does. It is a mod based on Episode X, which was based on speculation for The Universe is Toast.
When making copies of copies of video tapes, the quality begins to deteriorate gradually, until hand-me-downs of future generations look marred and grainy compared to the originals. Similarly, Episode Y seems a bit lacking compared to Episode X, which in turn seems lacking compared to the original Keen episodes. The robot designs are a bit mundane, the level design is a bit heavy on cooridors and light on points, and overall the entire game feels empty.
That isn't to say it's a bad mod, however. There are still interesting level designs, well-thought-out dangers and pitfalls, and a good balance of difficulty.
If you're looking for groundbreaking work insofar as patches are concerned, this mod is not for you. If you're looking for a pseudo-expansion pack to Episode X, this is a fantastic investment.
